Getting to and from the airport:

While there are plenty of taxis from the airport we recommend checking with your hotel to see if they provide transfers to and from the airport.

If you would like to book a private transfer for a small group we recommend:

Getting Around:

We have chosen the Savoy Palace for its central location and proximity to the centre of the city. Most everything is within a 30 min walking distance. Remember that Funchal is very hilly so make sure you factor that into your plans.

Car and motorcycle rentals are readily available from both the airport and around town.

While Uber, Lift and other ride sharing services are not available in Madeira, there is a similar APP called Bolt and heaps of Taxis. The bolt app will include both ride shares and taxis.

https://bolt.eu/en-gb/

For shorter trips around Funchal there is also a scooter hire called Superpedestrian. They are clean, modern and readily available in many parts of the city. The Superpedestrian app works much like the Uber app does.

ACTIVITIES AND THINGS TO DO

Madeira: Cable Car

The cable car lines run from Funchal to Monte, and back again, making this a fantastic way to scale mountains. The cars offer you views across the island as you travel and are a quick way to get around and see the sights.

So if you’re vacationing down in Funchal and fancy a visit to Monte, then it’s more than possible for you to do it as a return trip. Monte offers you fabulous views across part of the island and the opportunity to visit a traditional church.

This is also the spot where you can catch a toboggan back down the hill if you would prefer not to use the cable car both ways.

Please find below our suggestions.

Full day tour to the West of the Island

(9:00am  until 5:00pm) – Everyday – 33,00€ per person

Situated 5km from the city of Funchal, our first stop is the famous fishing village of Câmara de Lobos; a favourite painting spot of the late Winston Churchill! Thereafter we travel up to the magnificent 580m high, glass balcony view point of Cabo Girão, famous for being the highest in Europe and second highest cliff in the world.

Traveling along the coast of the island we soon arrive at the village of Ribeira Brava, where we can visit a church dated in the 15th century. Next we make our way to the 1007m high viewpoint of Encumeada, to enjoy beautiful landscapes overlooking the north and south coast of the island as well as the valleys of Ribeira Brava and São Vicente.

From an altitude of between 1300-1500 meters we find the tourist attraction of Paúl de Serra and it's initiation of several levada walks that connect to different points of the island through the Laurissilva forest such as Rabaçal, Risco, and the 25 fountains.

We then stop for a lunch and extra time at the seaside town of Porto Moniz - home of the largest volcanic natural pools of Madeira. On our decent towards the town we can enjoy fantastic views, especially those of the volcanic pools in their entirety. In the good weather it is possible to take a dip, so come prepared.

Next we enjoy a brief stop overlooking the black sandy beach and natural rock pools of Seixal village. Along the way, we have the pleasure of passing several waterfalls, particularly the famous and stunning Bridal Veil waterfall. Staring up at the water pouring down the mountain, you can see how the rock-face has been delicately sculpted by the wind and rain over millions of years to form what can only be described as the perfect art form.

Thereafter we visit the picturesque neighbouring village of São Vicente, where you can visit a beautiful church dating from the 17th century before returning to Funchal.

Full day tour to the East of the Island

(9:00am  until 5:00pm) – Everyday – 33,00€ per person

Our first stop is Pico do Areeiro, the third highest peak in the island, with an altitude of 1818m providing fabulous 360' island views. Often, rocky formations can be seen to be piercing through the clouds creating the most breath taking visuals and photo opportunities.

Next we move on to Ribeiro Frio (meaning cold river). Ribeiro Frio is a small village situated in the heart of the Laurissilva forest. It is the largest surviving area of laurel forest in the world and is believed to be 90% primary forest. In this classified UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, we can enjoy a fantastic variety of plants and species in habitat. We can also observe the interesting Trout farm made up (as naturally as possible) of stone enclosures, fresh flowing levada water, set against a beautiful backdrop of pure nature.

We continue our tour to Faial where we can view the imposing rock of Penha de Águia, which separates Faial from Porto da Cruz. With a lengthy stop at the village of Santana, you will have ample time for lunch and also take the opportunity to see Madeira’s world famous typical thatched roved triangular houses, painted in happy primary colours.

Passing by Portela, en route to Ponta São Lourenço; situated in the most eastern part of the island, we can see this magnificent landscape characterized by the fantastic combination of rocks, sea and nature. Our final stop is the larger city of Machico; the first area of the Island that the Portuguese navigators came across, at the time of the discoveries.

Half day tour to the Centre of the Island

(9:00am until 1:00pm or 2:00pm until 6:00pm) – 20.00 € per person - Everyday

A trip into the center of the island takes us down into the Valley of the Nuns; Curral das Freiras which is mystically overshadowed by beautiful mountains with peaks covered by the layers of white clouds.

Before reaching the valley we take in panoramic views of the Bay of Funchal from the 355m high viewpoint of Picos dos Barcelos. We continue onto the famous 1100m viewpoint of Eira do Serrado.

Overlooking extraordinary green landscapes from here we can see the village of Curral da Freiras. From this tour visitors can enjoy the landscape of the countryside, forestland and also the formation of the traditional secluded village. The inhabitants of which mainly live off what they farm, i.e. the local chestnuts are delicious and are often used in their daily cuisine and as well as throughout Madeira.
